Antiferromagnetic spin correlations in MnO nanoparticles

We have investigated nearly monodispersive MnO nanoparticles of 10 nm diameter by polarised neutron diffraction with XYZ-polarisation analysis. We found no long-range ordering down to 3.5K. A broad magnetic peak appeared close to Q1⁄4 (1/2,1/2,1/2) signifying short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The correlation length was found to be about 2.4 nm at T1⁄43.5 K. The correlation length decr...

Percolation Magnetism in Ferroelectric Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles of potassium tantalate (KTaO3) and potassium niobate (KNbO3) were synthesized by oxidation of metallic tantalum in molten potassium nitrate with the addition of potassium hydroxide. Magnetization curves obtained on these ferroelectric nanoparticles exhibit a weak ferromagnetism, while these compounds are nonmagnetic in a bulk. The experimental data are used as a start point for th...

Fabrication of Mn-ferrite nanoparticles from MnO colloids.

The reaction mechanism for conversion of MnO nanoparticles to Mn-ferrite nanoparticles was studied, which involved sequential consumption of MnO and the growth of ferrite. The method could be applied to other ferrite nanoparticles including cobalt ferrite.

Different properties of monomer and heterodimer forms of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases.

Phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-kinase plays an important role in the signalling of cell growth. We previously purified two types of PI 3-kinase from bovine thymus, a monomer from (PI 3-kinase I) and a heterodimer form (PI 3-kinase II) [Shibasaki, Homma and Takenawa (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 8108-8114]. Here we examine the properties of these purified PI 3-kinases. Both PI 3-kinases were inhibited...

Intracellular glutathione detection using MnO(2)-nanosheet-modified upconversion nanoparticles.

We report a novel design, based on a combination of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles and manganese dioxide nanosheets, for rapid, selective detection of glutathione in aqueous solutions and living cells. In this approach, manganese dioxide (MnO(2)) nanosheets formed on the surface of nanoparticles serve as an efficient quencher for upconverted luminescence. The luminescence can be tu...
